I have been recently reading many articles that allude to the death of the PC/Laptop computer in the advance of ongoing voyeurism of tablets into the realm of personal computing. Many analyst predict that, with the boost of tablet/e-reader sales this 2012 end, traditional computer use will wane off and wither away. Most people assume that the sales figures reflect the mood of the country; and to a degree, it does. More often than not, sales reflect current popular trends but not the overall state of things to come. Tablet devices will not push out the use of traditional laptops until fundamental issues are overcome.
Traditional input methods will be standard for a time to come. Unless there is a leap of technology and brain mousing becomes the norm, the traditional mouse/keyboard set-up will never die. For simple inputs, such as simple clicks that don’t hinder the user much, the tablet is the way to go. But for heavy business or graphic inputs, the keyboard/mouse setup reigns supreme.
Storage space will always be an issue with tablets. Until the time that the price for solid state drives goes down and the ability to download/upload/store local becomes a non-issue, laptops and desktops will stay the norm.
Bang for your buck, see above. Tablet makers has made great strides when it comes to driving down the cost of their devices. The new $80 kindle is a perfect example of where the market will be heading. You are getting a rock solid e-reader with a beautiful screen and flawless functionality. But, unless all you do all day is read e-books, you will be needing another device for working or web browsing.
Work Hard/Play Hard mentality will limit the tablets spread. By this, I mean that most people will do both on their traditional laptop device, working and playing when time permits. Unless tablets take off and increase their usability, bloom in storage, and offer better than traditional inputs, the one device mode will last.
Don’t get me wrong, tablets have their benefits. Tablets are convenient to use inside the home, for web browsing and e-book reading and are par excellent for taking the fun-times on the road, to the beach or a bookstore. If you look at the measures, it seems that tablets are on the upswing. If you’re in the web design field, most website designs require workarounds for tablet and smart phones and overall sales of the new iPad are thru the roof. But, as far as people taking to the streets to chuck out their outdated laptops/desktops and running to the stores to purchase the latest tablet, don’t you bet on it.

Website made entirely of chocolate to promote brands new line of chocolate beer. I applaud the Web Designers and the Chocolatier on the look and functionality of the site itself, but it lacks greatly in its intended purpose of promoting the beer.
It’s been a bumper crop day for portfolio work from me. Here is my professional Industrial Design Portfolio for your review.
Soo slacking these days. But classes have been all up my butt lately, needing and wanting things from me. So, i am going to set myself a personal goal to post something at least once a week and keep everyone in the loop on where I am in life and school.
Applying for a position at Robin Shepherd today has gotten me to digg deep into my stack of class projects and pull out a few gems. Hopefully, i will start working soon. If not, I am ahead for graduation.
Speaking of, I’ve been thinking hard on a theme for my portfolio site. Looking for something cool and fun, but clean. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know………….dBreaker
Kai the Chameleon’s new name is Jai the Chameleon (Jacksonville AI)……..

Jai the Chameleon is a project that our team, the Tri Fistdeez (Ivonne, Klara Cu, Dwayne Breaker). We were tasked to create a mascot for the Art Institute of Jacksonville and promote the mascot by any means necessary. Jai, (new official name!!!!) represents the students that come into the Art Institute, full of passion but lacking the knowledge necessary to start their career in Design. Jai embodies the students tasks ahead, taking bits and pieces of knowledge (colors) and forming them into a working set of skills that will get them moving in their career path!
Jai is a fun and happy looking Chameleon, and can change colors when necessary. The chameleons ability to change colors is representative of a designers need to be Jack-of-all-trades at any given moment in the real world. Jai also is a lizard and we hope that Jai will represent the Florida AI’s as he heeds to be in the tropics to survive. AI is also present in Jai’s pattern, as AI is prominent in making him who he is.
Please check out the Jai the Chameleon fan page on Facebook and leave a comment to let us know if we are on the right path.
Also, be aware of the guerrilla advertising around the school today (lost lizard) and have a great day!!!
